Earth Day 2022: FREE Trees to Help Heal Our Planet

Waco Friends of the Climate gave away Eastern Red Cedar seedlings on April 23rd at the Farmer's Market in Waco, from 9am until about 1:30pm.  The crowds were brisk, with frequent lines, very excited to have a free seedling.

We distributed approximately 350 trees by 1:30pm. Alan also dropped cartons of trees with friends who have acreage, and at Skellington Curiosities shop in Waco. Thanks to Carmen Saenz and Kylie Skellington .

Sincere thanks to our volunteer team: Harrison Ward for distributing trees; Carolyn Rodabough, Patricia Sappenfield, Joyce Nobis & Monty Suffern for processing large seedling clusters into individual small bags. Also thanks to Monty for contributing $$ to the effort.

We were gratified at the reception of the crowd at the Farmer's Market. Almost everyone seemed delighted to have these seedlings, and most understood the carbon sink potential. No climate science deniers were observed.

Carbon sink estimates:  current seedlings 5.9kgCO2/year; 10 year old tree 22kgCO2/year. Other benefits include decreasing the urban heat island effect in Waco, decreasing soil erosion, providing habitat for other creatures, cleaning the air, providing shade, increasing landscape beauty, and providing soothing space for humans.

Trees were supplied with a handout, which explained features of this species, Juniperus virginiana, with instructions for planting.

Given the positive reception, we anticipate another distribution in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

A few seedlings remain. If anyone would like one or more, text Alan at 254-744-1682.
