Earth Day Free Shopping Bags Event

The 3rd Annual Free Bags for the Biosphere event was held at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market on Saturday, April 22nd.  This was a very successful action.  About 610 reusable shopping bags were distributed.  We received a very positive reception from shoppers, with no negative response.

FOP/C would like to thank Erin of Channel 10 TV for conducting an interview.  We also wish to thank Waco Downtown Farmers Market for providing the excellent covered space for us.

FOP/C participants in the action were Alan, Richard, Harrison, two Anas, Sarah, Bruce and Sherrell.

The positive reaction from the shoppers was heartwarming during this era of celebrated scientific ignorance and environmental degradation.  Multiple people were interested in FOP/C, and contact information was exchanged.

Flores Town Hall Protest Action

On Wednesday, April 19th, Waco Friends of Peace/Climate hosted a demonstration outside the office of Rep. Bill Flores at 400 Austin Avenue in Waco.  At issue was Rep. Flores’ decision to forego town hall meetings in favor of telephone call-ins featuring screened questions.  The FOP/C demonstration was focused on Rep. Flores’ denying the urgency of immediate action to combat anthropogenic climate change, and his refusal to face his constituents face-to-face in a public forum.

Also present at the protest were Dr. Ellie Caston and several supporters, who were there to protest Rep. Flores’ support for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

This was a successful action.  Although there was the usual indifference shown by passing motorists, there was also much positive response and very little overt negativity.

Flores Townhall Protest: Don't Fear Our Voices

This is a call to action from Waco Friends of Peace/Climate:

WHEN: Wednesday, April 19, from 4:30 pm until 7:00pm.

WHERE: 400 Austin Avenue, Waco, Tx 76701, sidewalk in front of the building.

WHY:  Waco Friends of Peace/Climate has protested outside Flores' Townhalls for several years now, focused on his functional climate change denial.  This year the protest becomes more urgent: the Presidency of Trump threatens our climate progress,  Flores supports Trump's climate agenda, and Flores is hiding from his constituents, doing only telephone townhalls this month.

LOGISTICS:  A 15-foot banner declaring "FLORES/TRUMP: CLIMATE INACTION KILLS"  will be provided. But please make and bring your own personal signs.  We want to focus on climate AND on Flores' unwillingness to face his constituents.  For example: "Flores: The Truth Has Found You," or "Flores: Don't Hide from Your Employers."

IMPORTANCE:  We need ALL members present:  this action serves also as our monthly meeting.  Everyone did a fantastic job at the DAPL protests recently.  This protest is just as important, as Republicans like Flores empower Trump to take his devastating steps on pipelines, the Clean Power Plan, emissions limits, funding, etc.

TIMING:  Rationale for our time period:  we wanted to cover office hours by the 4:30 start, allow those working to make it after 5pm, and just in case Flores does the Townhall from his office, be in place for the start at 6:30 pm.

WEATHER:  Conditions look fantastic: 80°C at 6 pm, with no chance for rain.

ENJOYMENT:  With the 7pm finish, we can get together for dinner afterwards as we have done at previous protests.  There are several restaurants in the vicinity.

QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS:  Please feel free to contact Alan Northcutt at anorthc@aol.com.
