Earth Day 2015

The Waco Friends of Peace will celebrate Earth Day 2015 with distribution of FREE reusable shopping bags at the Downtown Farmers Market in Waco on Saturday, April 18th.  The organization will provide the large grocery-type bags from 9 am until 1 pm at the Market, 400 S. University Parks Drive.  The bags are embossed with the message: COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE—AVOID PLASTIC.  The use of reusable bags instead of plastic shopping bags helps combat climate change by eliminating the consumption of fossil fuels required in raw materials for the bags, and the energy required to produce and ship the bags.

Only a small percentage of plastic bags undergoes recycling.  In addition, use of reusable bags avoids local plastic litter, and decreases the massive plastic contamination of the oceans, which has created plastic islands, and causes the deaths of many fish, marine mammals, and birds.

Progressive Film Series: March 12th, 2015

BLACKFISH

Blackfish is the documentary for March.  The film relates the story of the killer whale Tilikum, a SeaWorld performer, who viciously kills two trainers.  It expands the discussion into the morality of keeping such huge and intelligent creatures in captivity.

This film is very educational about the habits and intelligence of killer whales, and the way in which man has trapped them and imprisoned them for our entertainment.   The documentary is moving on an emotional basis as well as on a scientific basis.  It emphasizes that we must learn to live in harmony with our fellow creatures as we convert to a low carbon energy system.

"An eye-opening ...gripping mindbender."-- Rolling Stone.

"A mesmerizing psychological thriller."-- Variety.
